Comyn always complained that this song was impossible to play because each time the verse begins after a chorus it starts on the last chord of the chorus (which is up a full step from the previous verse) so the only way he could remember it was to play it all barre chords and memorize the pattern and even then he'd mess it up every time. Only the first two verses and chorus are written out in notation here.

Farmer’s Lament

by Momus
[F#] Many times I [C#] pondered
have I [E] seen this all [B] before?
and [D] never does she [A] wonder
when I [C] wake up on the [G] floor.

[G] Not a drop in [D] thirty days
has [F] landed on my [C] head
[D#] in the fields my [A#] plough just rusts
and [C#] all my work lies [G#] dead

and [A#] in the [C#] night I [G#] hear my woman crying
[A#] in the [C#] fields my [G#] crops are slowly dying
[A#] just one [C#] drop Lord [G#] early in the morning
[A#] just one [C#] tear Lord, [G#] this is what I pray

[G#] All the time I’ve [D#] been here Lord
I’ve [F#] done just what you’ve [C#] said
[E] You know this prayer is [B] not for me
but [D] three young ones in [A] bed.

[A] All I need’s a [E] little help
and [G] I will do the [D] rest.
This [F] man just needs a [C] day of rain
to [D#] put it to the [A#] test.

‘cause [C] I can’t go on [D#] with my children [A#] crying
[C] in the fields my [D#] crops have all been [A#] dying
[C] just one drop Lord, [D#] early in the [A#] morning
[C] just one [D#] tear Lord [A#] this is what I pray

[A#] Mary now is [F] lying ill
and [G#] all the children [D#] lost
[F#] and I would give an [C#] eye for rain
or [E] two would fit the [B] cost

[B] I die a bit each [F#] passing day
one [A] drier than the [E] last
I [G] always knew my [D] time would come
but [F] never thought so [C] fast.

And [D] now I [F] lie here [C] all alone and crying
[D] in the [F] fields my [C] dreams have all been dying
[D] just take [F] me Lord [C] early in the morning
[D] just one [F] tear Lord, [C] this is what I pray.
